How to grow an Instagram page from zero: a realistic plan for beginners
Set up your profile, choose what to post, make reels people watch to the end and use Insights to grow. A 30-day plan for a new Instagram page.
Starting an Instagram page from zero is slow at first. You post, a handful of people see it, and it's easy to give up. The good news is that Instagram shows posts to people who don't follow you yet, especially reels. A new page with useful, original content can reach new people from its first week.
This guide covers what actually moves the numbers: a clear topic, a profile that makes people follow, content people save and share, and a weekly habit of checking what works.
Pick one topic and one kind of person
Pages grow when people can tell, in three seconds, what they will get by following. "Daily life" is hard to grow. "Easy eggless baking for beginners" or "Canva tips for small business owners" is easy to understand and easy to recommend.
Write one sentence: I help [who] with [what]. For example: "I help home bakers take better photos of their cakes." Every post should fit that sentence.
Set up a profile that makes people follow
When someone likes your reel, they tap your profile and decide in a few seconds. Make that decision easy:
- Switch to a professional account (creator or business) in your settings. It's free and it unlocks Insights, the numbers you need.
- Name field: add a keyword after your name, such as "Riya | Eggless Baking". Instagram search looks at this field, so people searching for the topic can find you.
- Username: short, easy to spell, and the same as your other accounts if possible.
- Bio: who you help, what they get, and what to do next. For example: "Simple eggless recipes for beginners · New reel every Tue & Fri · Recipes ↓"
- Profile photo: your face for a personal brand, your logo for a business, clear even at a small size.
- Highlights: three or four, such as "Start here", "Recipes", "Reviews".
Decide what to post: three or four content pillars
Content pillars are the few themes you rotate between, so you never stare at a blank screen. For a baking page:
| Pillar | Example posts |
|---|---|
| Teach | "3 reasons your cake sinks in the middle" |
| Show | Behind the scenes of a birthday cake order |
| Prove | A customer's reaction, a before-and-after |
| Personal | Your story, a failed bake, what you're learning |
Each format does a different job:
- Reels reach people who don't follow you yet. They are your main growth tool.
- Carousels (multi-image posts) get saved and shared, which tells Instagram the post is valuable.
- Stories keep your existing followers close: polls, questions, everyday moments.
Make reels people watch to the end
Instagram pays attention to how long people watch, and whether they share or save. A few habits make a big difference:
- Hook in the first one to two seconds. Start with the result, a bold statement or a question. "This ₹50 trick makes your cake photos look professional" works better than "Hi guys, welcome back".
- Put text on screen. Many people watch without sound. Add captions and correct the auto-captions, especially names and Hindi words.
- Keep it tight. Cut pauses and repetition. If a moment is boring, cut it.
- End with a reason to act. "Save this for your next bake" or "Follow for Part 2".
- Be original. Instagram has said it favours original content. Reposting other people's videos, or posting clips with another app's watermark, usually gets far less reach. If you use someone else's idea, add your own angle and credit them.
Hashtags and keywords
Hashtags alone won't make a post go viral, but they and the words in your caption help Instagram understand who your post is for. Use three to five specific hashtags that describe the post ("#egglesscake #homebakerdelhi"), not thirty general ones. Write captions in natural language that includes the words people would search for, such as "eggless chocolate cake recipe".
Grow with other people, not around them
- Reply to every comment in the first hour after posting. Conversations show Instagram the post is worth showing to more people.
- Comment genuinely on posts from accounts in your topic. A real comment is noticed; "Nice post 🔥" is not.
- Collab posts: make a post together with another creator and it appears on both profiles, in front of both audiences.
- Trial reels: test a new idea with people who don't follow you before it reaches your followers.
Check your Insights every week
Once a week, open Insights and look at your last few posts:
- Reach: how many accounts saw it. High reach means the hook and topic worked.
- Saves and shares: the strongest signs that a post was valuable.
- Profile visits and follows: whether your profile turned viewers into followers.
Make more of what worked and less of what didn't. That single habit is the difference between pages that grow and pages that stay stuck.
What not to do
- Don't buy followers or likes. Fake followers don't watch your posts, so your reach falls, and brands can spot them.
- Don't use follow/unfollow tricks or "engagement groups". They can get your account limited.
- Disclose paid partnerships. If a brand pays you or gives you free products, India's advertising rules (ASCI) require you to label the post clearly, for example with Instagram's "Paid partnership" label.
A 30-day plan for a new page
| Week | Focus | Posts |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Set up the profile, write your "I help…" sentence and pillars, study 10 pages in your topic | 2 reels, 1 carousel |
| 2 | Post on fixed days, reply to every comment, comment on 5 accounts a day | 3 reels, 1 carousel |
| 3 | Try one collab post and one trial reel; check Insights | 3 reels, 1 carousel |
| 4 | Repeat your best topic in a new way, update your bio and highlights | 3 reels, 2 carousels |
Before you start, write down your followers and accounts reached in the last 30 days. Compare after 30 days. Growth is rarely a straight line, and nobody can promise a number, but a page that posts useful, original content on a schedule and learns from its Insights almost always grows.
